A Mixed Bag of Weather, A Season to Remember
Returning for his fourth trip of the year, Jim once again made the journey across the Channel to Compton’s Lakes in France — and this visit turned out to be as unpredictable as it was rewarding. The French autumn served up a true variety pack of conditions: warm sunshine one day, cool winds the next, and bouts of steady rain that rippled across the surface of the lakes.
For Jim, it was all part of the experience. The ever-changing weather demanded patience, adaptability, and focus — qualities that every seasoned angler knows well. It’s that blend of challenge and anticipation that keeps anglers returning to Compton’s year after year.
Fishing, Fitness, and Focus
This trip wasn’t just about fishing. Alongside his time on the bank, Jim was also preparing for his upcoming half marathon on November 9th. Determined to stay on track with his training, he balanced his runs with dedicated fishing sessions — an impressive feat of discipline and time management. Early-morning runs around the peaceful French countryside were followed by long, focused hours by the lake, where his patience and precision were once again put to the test.
The combination of physical endurance and the calm rhythm of fishing proved to be the perfect balance. Both demanded focus, consistency, and determination — qualities that served him well throughout the trip.
Fishing Through Every Forecast
During his stay, Jim concentrated mainly on daytime fishing, making the most of the light and the calmer spells between showers. The conditions shifted constantly, but his determination never wavered. Each day brought new opportunities to adjust his tactics and test his approach against whatever nature decided to deliver.
Across the session, Jim had eight runs in total — those thrilling moments when the alarms sound and the action begins. Out of those, six carp were successfully landed, while two managed to evade capture shortly after the rods were lifted. Even with a few near misses, the results were exceptional, reflecting both his skill and persistence on the water.
Big Carp, Bigger Smiles
The effort paid off handsomely, producing an impressive series of mirror carp, each one in outstanding condition. The standout catch of the trip tipped the scales at 40lb 8oz, accompanied by others at 20lb 6oz, 29lb, 31lb, 32lb 8oz, and 35lb 12oz. Every fish was a fine example of the quality that Compton’s Lakes continues to produce.
Jim’s approach was precise and well thought out. He relied on TBS47 20mm fruity crustacean boilies, presented over a carefully prepared bed of pellets, chopped boilies, and maize. This balanced mix offered both attraction and sustenance, encouraging the carp to feed confidently even in unsettled weather. The results spoke for themselves — consistent action and some truly memorable captures.
A Memorable End to the Season
As his session drew to a close, Jim could reflect on another successful trip to Compton’s Lakes — his fourth visit this year and certainly one to remember. Balancing his half marathon training with a demanding week of angling, he proved that focus and preparation pay off both on the track and on the water. Despite the varied weather and the challenges it brought, he left with a collection of incredible catches and another chapter added to his growing list of French fishing memories.
With the season now coming to an end, the lakes will soon enjoy a well-deserved winter rest. When Compton’s Lakes reopens in May, anglers will once again have the opportunity to experience its peaceful setting, thriving fish stocks, and the unique sense of calm that only a great fishing venue can provide.
Whether you’re chasing your next personal best or simply escaping to the tranquility of the French countryside, Compton’s Lakes promises another year of unforgettable angling ahead. Jim’s latest adventure was proof that, no matter what the weather brings, patience, preparation, and passion always find their reward beneath the surface.
